I Need a Phone: Can the Stubborn Donkey be Convinced?

Top Ten Tuesday

I have wanted a cell phone for a long time, but have gotten used to doing without. However, recently I was on a cell phone plan with Chris's mom; she was stuck paying for her son Daniel's old phone when he moved, and was kind enough to let me use it. Unfortunately, I ended up losing it, presumably by throwing it away on a fast food tray. Of course by then I was accustomed to having a phone, so it has been difficult to go back to doing without. I have been searching for a good phone, a good plan, and a good way to convince Chris.

Of course, geek that I am, I can't just settle for a simple phone; I've had my sights set on a Treo (phone/PDA) for the last 3-4 years. Today, I finally looked into the details of the discount plan Chris has access to through his work, and I found an appealing option. I went to Chris with the details and he seemed hesitant, but at least willing to discuss it. He asked me to write a proposal, detailing the need, the advantages, and the costs. I was a bit annoyed that he wanted me to write this all out, since I could just as easily recite it all to him in about two minutes. However, I was excited that he was actually inviting some dialogue on the subject, so I quickly typed up a bulleted list of reasons for him. I thought about making it fancy or clever, but I didn't think this would be a great use of my time, since the house was a mess and I had tons of laundry to do. Little did I know that my Treo Proposal was being published to his blog, so he could run a poll and let the blogosphere vote on my fate.

I invite you all to visit his blog and vote. Had I known my proposal was being published, it may have looked a little more like this:

Top Ten: Reasons It's Treo Time for Nancy

10. In the past month, I've had to search for, then stop and use a pay phone at least 3 times (usually to get in touch with Chris). Have you seen how expensive those things are these days?--Not to mention the fact that I need a HAZMAT suit before I dare touch the phone and put it to my ear!
9. I am the one in charge of all information coming in and out of the house--mail, bills, school reminders, car registration, taxes, health information, important addresses, lists, gift shopping and shipping, travel arrangements, babysitting schedules, prescriptions, magazine subscriptions...
8. The Post-It Notes just aren't cutting it anymore, especially with 3 little guys who think any piece of paper they find is for paper airplanes or confetti-making.
7. I am in the midst of setting up a Getting Things Done system, which will be greatly enhanced by a method for keeping digital lists and information at my fingertips.
6. I am not a big spender--I don't shop at the mall, I don't buy expensive shoes, I don't even order soda when we go out to eat!
5. I have waited long enough that this is certainly not an impulse purchase.
4. I am in charge of transporting our precious cargo (3 adorable little boys) 90% of the time, and have no way to arrange for roadside assistance in case of an accident or emergency.
3. I am Chris's personal secretary--I set up his doctor's appointments, I proofread everything he writes, I drop off his dry cleaning, I mail his letters to his missionary-brother, I pay his tuition, I even provide a personal reminder service when he has special calls to make or meetings to go to.
2. I am often Chris's chauffeur, and he often requests a phone call reminding him to start packing up his things and meet me outside of his office building.
1. Chris has a cell phone/PDA which he uses constantly and can't be without!

What do you think? Be sure to cast your vote!

You deserve it! I think you should just take his and let him see what life is like without. You go girl! I went to vote for you but I got a "couldn't process request" error. You might want to make sure he's not rigging the vote.

If any deserves a treo, it most certainly is you. I could get a treo and use one or two of it's functions. I have full confidence that you would utilize every cool function that it has!

I have been eyeing those also and would love it for organizing all of those things that need organizing. I'm all for you needing one. Good luck!!

I put this on Chris' blog as well.

First I am in favor of Nancy receiving a cell phone and I have voted the "phone only" option in the poll. The argument for safety is a compelling one.

Having said that, I understand that Nancy has a history of losing phones, not once, but twice. I do not think an additional investment in a Treo would be a good one until it can be demonstrated that proper care can be taken with a telephonic device that includes getting used to carrying one.

You can get a prepaid phone from Walmart for $18.00. Let me propose that Nancy get a cheaper phone for a time and when it can be demonstrated that the phone is in good hands, talk about an upgrade.

You don't want to give someone a porsche if they are just learning to drive.

Um, I think you know this is making me cringe. You are saying that your husband has a phone/PDA (does work provide this?) and he made you write a proposal to determine if you "deserve" one. I'd like to see anyone juggle three kids and a dependent spouse and the responsibilities that go along with that, and not accidentally lose something. You don't need a "trial run", as suggested by the obviously male poster, Nancy. You can get insurance for those kinds of accidents.

Nancy,
You must be a much better wife than I am because I would have gone out and already bought it! I've been reading your blogs for a while now and check back often to see what's new with you. You and Chris are too funny.
We are well here in CA. I'm expecting Baby #4 in January! We'll now have 2 girls and 2 boys.
I'll be checking back to see who "wins."

I was thinking the same thing as Amy. If hubby has one, you get one!! End of story.

This is madness. Work pays for my phone, not me. I can't even justify having it since I don't utilize the features. Nancy conveniently left that part out. Once she can juggle 1 phone without losing it I will consider something more advanced. As I said on my post, if Nancy thinks this will enable her to be a better "secretary," I will start holding her accountable to those standards. Look forward to a Wife Performance Appraisal. I will make this available to all of the husbands out there that just don't know how to hold their wives accountable.

Some of us don't have husbands who hold us "accountable". AND it sounds like some of you husbands may need a visit to your bishop for exercising improper authority.

Just my humble opinion.

I admit it; apparently Chris's tendency to purposely irritate people is rubbing off on me. I knew people would go crazy hearing that he had a phone/PDA and I didn't. Like he said, his work pays for his (and while it's true he doesn't use all the features, he uses the phone, email, and calendar extensively). Other people are wondering why I have to ask his permission to buy something. This has nothing to do with him being the husband; neither of us would make a purchase like this without the other person being ok with it. His idea for me to write a proposal was just a creative way for us to discuss the pros and cons (and a sneaky way for him to post it all). Anyone who understands my strong-willed tendencies (=general bossiness) knows that I would never get along with a husband who truly thought he could control me or write up a performance appraisal. Neither Chris nor I are truly at odds on this topic; we are just having fun opening up our discussion to the public.

I hope all of this fun leads to you getting your phone, Nancy.

Best of luck!

PS: Sorry, but the feminist in me just cannot keep my mouth shut.

Just like the "feminist agitator" in Chris can't keep his mouth shut. :)

I feel your pain, we just switched service to Cingular, Brad got the new fancy-dancy Blackberry, 'cuz GE pays for it, I had to get the free phone. It's is a cute pink RAZR, but that is SO last year! (it was one of those- let's see how it goes then you can upgrade type agreements, but really once you get everythinng set up and actually know how your phone works you never will make the switch unles it breaks!) What a jip!
