A Day of Change

Top Ten Tuesday

Tommy was on the news today. I won't bother posting a clip because it's a bit hard to see him, but take my word for it--he was adorable. A reporter went to his classroom to interview them about September 11th, since he and his classmates were born in 2001. That (and this post) got me thinking back to the way I spent that Tuesday 6 years ago, when I was a brand new Mommy of a one-month-old baby.

Top Ten: Ways That Day Changed Me
  1. I started watching the news regularly.
  2. I started paying attention to the political news, instead of just the Hollywood headlines.
  3. I recognized that I had no control over what kind of world my baby would be growing up in.
  4. I have more patience for security measures that I used to consider a pure nuisance.
  5. The phrase "foreign policy" is no longer an abstract concept I wrote essays about in college.
  6. I have a better appreciation for heroic people whose job it is to put their life on the line to help others.
  7. I view our nation's history--particularly stories of people living in wartimes--in a new light.
  8. I am less certain about the future; anything seems possible now.
  9. I am more interested in being an informed, involved citizen.
  10. I hold on to my loved ones a little tighter.
And you?

I of course remember feeling what a great sense of community there was in the nation. I feel bad that goes away so quickly. Maybe for now it means supporting a presidency even if I don't agree with everything that is going on in the world. (as a registered democrat, that takes a lot to say!)

Number 10 for me. Lovely list. THanks for sharing, we have all been changed in some way by that day.

While some people felt their patriotism grow after that day, my patriotism deflated after watching our country turn its wrath on others in order to exact vengeance. I think I am definitely more jaded.

Thanks for this refreshing post. My english teacher this semester is the craziest conspiracy theorist. He says 9-11 was planned by the gov't so they could go to war, blah blah blah...

Nancy - I decided to pop in and see how your family is doing. When I read this, it reminded me that I found out by going to a midweek activity at Wymount. I don't remember what we had planned to do, but I remember we all ended up watching the news together instead. I seem to remember you being there - were you?
