A Very Special Christmas

Top-Ten Tuesday

We taped every Christmas special we could this month, and have been enjoying them day after day after day...

Top Ten: Christmas Specials We're Watching
  1. A Charlie Brown Christmas. Most of this list is not in order, but I had to list this one first, as it is one of the few programs that dares to explain that Christmas is about the baby Jesus. They even have the nerve to quote a passage from the Bible!
  2. Charlie and Lola Christmas Special. This one's taped, but I haven't watched it yet. I feel confident listing it as a favorite, since I love every episode of this show!
  3. Dora the Explorer: A Present for Santa. I just love this one because we have been watching it since Tommy was very young, and Christmas isn't Christmas until I hear Boots, Dora, and Santa singing Feliz Navidad!
  4. Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Only three words to describe that guy: Stink, Stank, Stunk. I wish I could figure out the words to the Whoville Christmas song; I always want to sing along.
  5. Tom & Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale. I must confess, I haven't sat down and watched this. It may turn out to be incredibly violent--especially for today's sanitized standards. But they use the actual Nutcracker music, so I enjoy listening to the boys watch this one.
  6. 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. I love watching the poetry come to life
  7. Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Just when you thought you'd seen enough politically correct cartoons celebrating various winter holidays, you get to see Wubbzy and his friends decorate the Figgity-Fig Tree for the Winter Festival.
  8. Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer. I actually considered leaving this one off my list, because it's getting quite dated, and truth-be-told, I find it a bit creepy. But my list wouldn't be complete without it.
  9. A Christmas Story. This one hasn't played yet, but we are anxiously awaiting it.
  10. It's a Wonderful Life. Classic.
You'll notice of course that my list is heavily slanted toward animated/children's specials. It's also missing some true classics. What are some of your favorites?

UPDATE: Its' been pointed out in the comments that Amazon Unbox has a great Holiday Movies Selection; you can purchase DVDs or download the movies directly. [Affiliate Link]

  1. I love many of the ones on your list too. I also found Rudolph a bit creepy and can't figure out why it's still shown. I enjoyed the Charlie and Lola special, but I love Charlie and Lola. I don't really like It's a Wonderful Life. It makes me too sad, the ending doesn't make up for all the bad stuff in my mind. I rather enjoy the Muppets Christmas Carol with Michael Caine. It's a good one.

  2. I love love love White Christmas. It is one of my favorite movies, let along Christmas movies. The song "Sisters" just makes me giggle every time I hear it. And the scene very closely following that where they dance out on the dock - is that Danny Kaye or Bing, I can't remember. Anyway - I saw it when I was very young and totally remembered that scene but didn't know what movie it was in. So when I saw White Christmas again as an adult I was so excited to know where the scene that inspired so many Barbie and Ken moments of my youth came from.

  3. Oh - And I just noticed that Amazon Unbox has a section right now with some great Christmas classics, like A Christmas Story.

  4. I LOVE Rudolph! It has actually been hard to find here, but we are lucky enough that a neighbor has it, so we will watch it while baking cookies on Christmas Eve with our friends. If you want another "creepy" one - try Jim Henson's first -- "Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas." It is great to see how children's entertainment has progressed since then. It is an awesome piece of history, and a great story.

We just watched and I alsl love this time of year: The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was nice watching it with some people on campus. Calvin really enjoyed it and made us believe he may actually be able to sit through a feature length film. I love Tim Burton.

  5. I love all of the above mentioned specials but my favorites are
always "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" for humor, "The Grinch" out of the animated ones and "The Gathering" for a goo cry.

  6. We have all but Dora recorded too. John's favorite has been Charlie Brown. I love it too -- especially the music.

  7. We've been watching the Shrek Christmas special almost daily since we recorded it last week. It's pretty good. It's the original voices too, so thats impressive.

  8. We Tivoed (sp?) a Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas special a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, it was automatically deleted so I can't tell you the title, but at our house we still love all things Winnie-the-Pooh and when I asked her, that's the one my 4 year old recommended. It was an older one--not that new Super Sleuths kind.

  10. One of my favorites has always been "Miracle on 34th Street". The new one or the old one. "White Christmas" is a great one, and my kids also love the Charlie Brown specials. I wish we could record all of these. That would be awesome.
