Month in Review: May 2007

Welcome to the Month in Review: May 2007, documenting key events for our family history. For those who don't check the blog regularly, this is a great place to get caught up. And faithful readers, don't worry; there are some new tidbits here too.

  • The first day of May was our first day back from our cruise. It was a little sad to be back, but of course we were excited to see the kids again. After our trip, Chris had just a few days before he was back in night classes.
  • Chris's summer term started at the University of Utah. He now has classes 4 nights a week--which partially explains the increased frequency of my blogging. Only one year to go on his MBA! For those of you trying to keep track, he already got his Bachelors at BYU and his Masters at Utah State. He just can't stay away from the classroom!
  • The last Monday night before summer classes started, we had a had a great time bowling for our Family Home Evening activity.
  • For his day-job, Chris is still working at the LDS Church, in the IT department, as an HR Business Partner (he switched over from Recruiting in March). His new role entails working with management on employee relations issues, staffing, organizational development, training and development, and lots of other HR-related projects.
  • I started a blog for my High School Senior Class. So far, about 50 people have signed on. It has been fun to catch up with some old friends.
  • Tommy gave a speech in school, about the Tasmanian Devil. This was his third speech this year and he managed to give the whole speech using an outline, instead of reading verbatim! He was determined to do a good job, and reminded me every day for a month that we needed to work on the speech! He was great!
  • Baseball Season is underway. This means Chris gets to obsess over the Yankees' games and standings! He also loves to play home run derby with his brothers. This year, they joined a softball team; poor Chris only gets to play on the rare nights that he doesn't have class, homework, or study groups.
  • I was very excited to attend Spencer Glenn's wedding reception in Salt Lake. It was fun to see Courtney and lots of her family members there, as she and her husband, Dan Peck were on their way to their new job/life in Poulsbo, WA--near Seattle.
  • Tommy had a week off of school for end-of-year testing, so I got a preview of what summer vacation will be like: Fun, but exhausting.
  • We went to Park City to watch Chris's little sisters participate in a gymnastics competition (they did great!). Chris went to the outlet mall and set a new record by buying another pair of jeans! For the first 7 years of our marriage he owned none; in the last year he has acquired 3 pairs. Don't get too excited though, baggy sweat pants will always be his #1 love.
  • We had a fun dinner with one of my mission companions--Zara Ulikhanyan, now married to Nico Amorros. It was great to catch up with them. Chris and I both knew her in the England when she had just arrived from Armenia!
  • Chris had a surprise one Sunday. They were reorganizing the Elder's Quorum Presidency at church, and he found out he was being called as a counselor--right then and there, in the meeting. Apparently, there was a miscommunication about who was going to ask him ahead of time. (He still said yes.)
  • We fulfilled Michael's life-long dream of riding the real-life Thomas the Train. Imagine, two years old, and his greatest aspiration has already become a reality. He still talks about it every day.
  • I got to have a real mom's holiday on Memorial Day weekend. Chris took the kids up to Idaho to visit his Mom, while I had a nice weekend of relaxing and working on projects. They got back in time for us to host a BBQ Monday night, with some Clarks--Tom, Daniel, Ryan & Brittany (McBride).
  • We finally took photos of our house.
  • David is getting chubbier by the minute. He will probably start thinning out soon, as he is nearly ready to walk. He can pull himself up and walk around holding on to furniture. He is also having a great time climbing the stairs! He can copy lots of sounds we make, his favorites being uh-oh, dada, and mama. He also likes to say buh-buh, earning himself the nickname, Buh-buh-buh-Junior.
That's it for May. We are looking forward to a fun and busy summer. Stay caught up with us here.

You be the Judge

One of my favorite things about blogging is getting to glimpse into other people's lives. Reading about people's fun times as well as the not-so-fun-times helps me feel connected--like I'm not the only one at home during the day. So, in the interest of full-disclosure, as a follow-up to the home sweet home post and the walking tour, I would like to show you a few more photos of my home...

See this nice bedside table?
Well, it's new, and fortunately it was empty when I was taking photos the other day, so I filled it with all of the junk that was on my desk. And here is what it all looked like when I needed to find one simple piece of paper that was placed on the desk only a few days ago. Here is the pile of laundry that I moved from room to room to make sure it wouldn't show in any of the pictures I took
(notice how I can't even get it to stay in the baskets?)And this is what my floor normally looks like, from the time the kids are awake until they go to bed (and then, for some inexplicable reason, I put it all away, just so they can get it all out and make it look the same way the next day).Last but not least, a picture of my kitchen last night. The astute observer will note the remains of three distinct meals--including a cereal bowl from breakfast and an uneaten pb&j from lunch--all still out in the open a few hours after the kids are in bed! The only reason the sink isn't overflowing with dishes is because I made microwave dinners for the kids (also shown).
So, that's the real story.

In answer to Amy's question--have I always been organized? Ask Courtney, who knows my messy history. Not only did she often witness me crying over my clutter in college (for me, the stress of finals was nothing compared to the stress of trying to pack up and move out of an apartment), but in High School I used to invite her over to watch me clean my room, because the mess was too much for me to face alone! So, no I have not always been organized , but I have always aspired to it and now I love doing it. You do remember how I had a weekend to myself and I chose to spend my days at home cleaning instead of out at a spa being pampered like any sane woman would have done??

I have some areas in my life & house that are pretty organized, but there are other spots that I just can't seem to get a handle on (case in point: the above photo of all the paper spread out on my bed--that's not a one-time thing). What I love is trying to figure out a system for doing something, and then finding something that works--suddenly that area simply stops causing me problems! Slowly, I have been able to do that in some areas of my house. Just don't get the idea that it's everywhere, or all the time. No, that's only in my dreams. And, maybe when it does happen I can start dreaming of normal things--like pedicures and massages...

P.S. This is one day I'm hoping Chris doesn't look at the blog. I did manage to clean all that up before he came home late last night... :)

Home Sweet Home

Top Ten Tuesday

After moving in last year (Feb 2006), we have finally taken photos of our home! I got the camera out as soon as I got everything clean and organized this last weekend; after all, there may never be another time when all the rooms are clean at once. We are so happy with this house. It may seem small to some people, but to us it still feels large and luxurious. Those six years of apartment-living have helped us not take things for granted.

Top Ten: Great Things about Owning our Home:

  1. It's ours! Ours to decorate and put nails in. And maintain and fix. On second thought, maybe we won't be putting too many more nails in...
  2. It may be small, but it has a lot of heart (=closet space).
  3. We got to choose the colors. In my case, that meant choosing which shade of beige I liked best (I'm a little boring).
  4. We have stairs. Now our younger children can learn the important skill of stair-climbing in the comfort of our own home. In the past, we've always let them practice in the step-down foyers at church, during "fussy-time" (=Sunday School).
  5. We are allowed to jump on the floor, since we no longer have downstairs neighbors. This was Tommy's favorite thing to do when we moved in.
  6. The floors actually look clean when we wash them. (There goes the excuse I always used for never mopping in my old apartments...)
  7. No more flushing rent money down the toilet!
  8. We can fit our bed in our bedroom, with room to walk on both sides.
  9. Since we bought the house brand new, every scratch and dent is ours; we know the story behind each one. Most of the marks are because of my inability to decide where I wanted each piece of furniture when we moved in, but some are from toys being chucked at the walls (the down-side of the nice, durable metal trains I recommended).
  10. It's home and we love it.

To Nap or Not to Nap

...Isn't that always the question? A nice nap is always such a treat, but I sometimes talk myself out of napping, thinking of all that I could be doing if I weren't asleep. Today, it was a no-brainer. Long, lazy nap. All afternoon. Thanks again, Chris for giving me a few days off!!

Holiday Weekend

It is often observed that mother's don't have holidays. I've noticed it in my life. In some ways holidays feel like any other day, since I am required to do the same things I normally do: wake up early, feed the kids, keep things clean, etc.

Well, my sweet husband has made it possible for me to have my own little holiday weekend. He took the kids up to visit his mom in Idaho, and I stayed behind. I'll have a nice couple days of relaxing and doing whatever I want, whenever I want. The funny thing is, what I want to do is get the house in order. When I have the house to myself, all I want to do is clean out closets, organize files, scrub the bathtubs--all the things that are difficult to do with children underfoot. The great thing is, when everyone gets back, we're all excited to see each other, and I feel more equipped to get back to doing my job!

I should also mention something important: While it may be true that moms don't get much time off, for me there is one very satisfying trade-off. All of the holidays and celebrations have taken on new meaning for me now that I get to share them with my children. I remember as a teenager a lot of special events started to feel less special to me. Christmas wasn't as exciting, birthdays didn't come with fancy invitations & theme parties, 4th of July fireworks seemed to get smaller and less thrilling. Having children has changed all of that. The anticipation that I feel for their sake is even better than what I felt as a child. And watching them enjoy the moments is more thrilling, since I am involved in making the events special for them.

I'll still sit this one out, but I will miss them...

All Aboard... the Real Thing!

I was so excited to take the boys on this outing! I kept it a secret from them until yesterday. When I told Tommy what we were doing, he was so excited to share the news with Michael (our resident train lover.) They were both thrilled!Michael was hoping Thomas would be pulling Annie & Clarabel. In actuality, the rest of the train was comprised of standard cars from the Heber Valley Railroad. But when Michael saw the passenger cars, he declared that they were the Troublesome Trucks.
We sat in the first car behind the Thomas "engine." Luckily, there was a little window in the front of our car, so they could see that Thomas was in fact "pulling" us.
(I decided not to point out that we were actually going the opposite direction.)We rode for about 30 minutes. The boys had such a great time, and made the most of the fact that there were no seatbelts.

Baby Face

I was just browsing through some photos that Chris's Dad took a few months ago when he was visiting. I had not seen these of David yet; what a cutie! He is getting so big now. He is already crawling up the stairs, and pretty soon he will be walking. He is always smiling and playful. His happiness brings such joy to our home!

Watch Out Ladies...

...My very mature husband has decided to crash the slumber party again. Tomorrow he is going to chase girls around the playground and pull their pigtails. You know what that means, right?
..."Chris and Nancy sitting in a tree... K-I-S-S-I-N-G..."
Consider yourself warned, and keep a sense of humor as you read his latest post.

Why I love me

[This post was written by Chris, back when he had permission to post on my blog.]

What a special activity. I don’t want to, but I just have an inner need to spout off 10 things about me that I love. This will help me realize my true actualization as a person, man, individual, and physical body on this glorious earth I call home. I hope this doesn’t come across egotistical or prideful, but here goes:

* I love that I am me. I mean, who else would I be? Just me. I love me.
* I love that I am pretty much the greatest person around. I have faults. Well I don’t think I do, but I am willing to admit it is a possibility.
* That leads me to my next point. I love that I can admit that I might have flaws. I don’t know if I am not perfect, but I am thinking about considering the idea.
* I love that I have ideas. I think all the time, “I am great at coming up with ideas.” Even if they aren’t meaningful, I have ideas come to mind at least once or twice a week.
* I love that I am unique. You might think that I am not since I am just a normal guy spending time on my blog, but I am unique. You might even say, “He has brown hair and blue eyes and there really isn’t anything that distinguishes him from anyone else.” But you are wrong. I am actively coming up with ways to support this and would be happy to share when I find proof.
* I love that I am willing to share ideas that I am still formulating about how I am unique. What a precious gift that is. You probably don’t have that gift like I do.
* I love that I have gifts that you don’t have. That isn’t your fault—I am unique! I have ideas. But I am not willing to share my gifts.
* I love that I protect my gifts that I have or that I am trying to prove that I have. I can’t really articulate any of these supposed gifts, and they might not actually exist. But I dream about them and protect them.
* I love that I am a dreamer. I dream about having gifts and being unique because of these gifts and ideas that I have been thinking about, and searching for. This is because I am great, and I love that. Because I am me.
* I love that I am me. I mean, who else could have created a list like this?

I am the most humble person I know, so please don’t judge me. This is a simple attempt to express the LOVE I have for me, me, me.

Yours Truly

Top-Ten Tuesday
I had already decided to start publishing top-ten lists on Tuesdays, but hadn't chosen today's topic until I read Mama Nirvana's challenge. What a great idea, Amy! I certainly needed the reminder; it's so easy to focus on the negative and not recognize the good in myself. I've been thinking about it all morning while sorting and folding laundry. (I promised myself I wouldn't post today until I tackled the ENORMOUS pile of clean clothes that I have been avoiding for over a week). The closets and dressers are now fully stocked, so here goes...

TOP TEN: THINGS I LOVE ABOUT ME (in no particular order)
  1. I love that I am good with money. I enjoy watching a savings account grow, and I refuse to pay interest to the credit card companies. I manage the household money and accounts, and do a decent job of it. I pay all the bills early, keep track of receipts, and account for every dollar coming in and out of our hands.
  2. I can be happy. I say "can be" because I am very aware that happiness is a choice. I love that when I decide to do it, I can be happy amid all sorts of circumstances.
  3. I love that I can express myself through writing and that I understand grammar rules. I enjoy editing things to make them correct and concise.
  4. I am committed to doing what is right, no matter what. I'm not saying that I don't make lots of mistakes; it's just that I have always had a strong desire to do the right thing, and I love that about myself. There is a quote that I often repeat to myself, and I try to live by: "Live in such a way that if everyone lived the way you did, the world would be a better place."* This means that even when there isn't a law or rule, I have to think, "Okay, if everyone in the world left it up to someone else to refill the toilet paper roll, the world would not be a better place, so I guess I better refill this roll myself." That is actually how I think. Scary, I know. (*Don't quote me on that. I'm reciting from memory, and I'm having trouble locating the source. It is similar to a quote from Immanuel Kant: "Live your life as though your every act were to become a universal law.")
  5. I am a good swimmer. I love that I have that skill. I've never competed on a swim team, but I swim for exercise and thoroughly enjoy it. I swam a few races at a church swim party a while ago, and I held my own, even beating some of the men and teenagers! Last time I raced against Chris, we tied. He now refuses to race me for more than one lap because he knows I will win!
  6. I am pretty smart. Even though I got my degree as a Social Studies Teacher, I'm not the kind of person that knows lots of facts and information. I guess I love my brain: it is good at processing, figuring things out, and solving problems. For my daily life, this means:
    • I was quick to learn and understand everything about programming my Tivo
    • I am always in charge of reading the directions when we put furniture together or play a new game
    • I'm really good at fitting all the dishes in the dishwasher, so I don't have to do any handwashing
  7. I generally admit my mistakes. After an argument, misunderstanding, or any kind of altercation with anyone, I look back and try to determine what role I played, and what I should have done differently. I love that I am not settled until I have apologized and resolved things with others.
  8. I love the way I love my kids. I love how it feels to dote on them, to share their joys and sadness, and even to worry about them. It feels good to love others so deeply.
  9. I am constanly seeking to improve myself. I love that I want to change myself, to improve, to be better. Not only is it the purpose of life, it feels good to be constructive with my own life and habits.
  10. I can carry a tune. I'm no soloist, but I can blend and harmonize in a choir; I love that I can sing well enough to entertain my children and help them love music.
Wow, that was a bit difficult. I found it especially hard to talk about my good qualities without qualifying them or explaining how they can also be my faults. I also started feeling guilty saying good things about myself, which is really sad if you think about it. Of course, there is a balance, but I want to spend more time appreciating and less time berating myself!

What about you?

Can't Help but Love Him

Chris has now officially joined the blog (see his first post), and of course he can't control the urge to mock me. In my defense, I will say that he has been begging me to set up something like this for a long time; he has always wanted a family website that was easy to update and archive. Also, he has his own blog, where he publishes stories about his family--most are made up or VERY exaggerated, since that is his specialty.

Seriously though, I love this guy. Look forward to more posts from him in the future, including our upcoming feature posts, "He Said, She Said," where we'll take turns telling our sides of various stories.

One more thing: I'm not sure why he would complain about me having a hobby that frees him up to watch ESPN in peace...

Blog Addicts

I would never have guessed that this blog stuff would be so addicting for some people. If you, like my wife, are one of the addicts, you need help. Here are some things that indicate you need help:

  • You have over 15 browser windows or tabs open at once, all with different blogs
  • By the time you look through your 15+ favorite blogs, you are ready to start again to see if anyone else posted something new while you were reading
  • You badger your spouse, who is busy doing useful things, to finally post to the "family blog"
  • You have designed a holster for your camera so you can be sure to capture any moment that is blog worthy
  • You think that you might be able to stretch something as mundane as vacuuming into an interesting post
  • You now consider chicken nuggets from McDonalds a nutritious dinner alternative

I actually think these things are fairly useful for historical purposes, but I don't have a lot of time to update it often.

The kids are doing well. Tommy was telling me the other day how critical the number 60 is because without it there would be no minutes since we wouldn't have 60 seconds. Then he said that there would be no hours since there are 60 minutes in an hour. He continued by postulating that no hours means no days and no days means no people since there would be no birthdays. He added that the other side effect of no days is no world since the world needs days. I didn't know what to say, so I just said, "That's probably true."

Now I am told that I will answer some questions. Here you go:

-Power Ranger/Batman for kids' parties

  2. Pride & Prejudice (A&E Version)

Four things I would like to learn or be better at:
  1. Graphic Design
  2. Getting balanced meals on the table consistently

  2. With my whole family (the Worths) at the West Virginia vacation lodge we rented last year (5 stories, private bedrooms/bathrooms for each family, indoor pool, 2 huge kitchens, game rooms, etc...) We are definitely going back.
  3. Playing with the kids in a back yard. (The only thing that it is missing from our great little townhome)
  4. At a much-needed reunion of Corvallis Friends. I've been trying to come up with a name that captures who I am referring to. Maybe "Corvallis Stake Youth of the 90s."??
Four people who I tag:
  1. Chris
  2. Kelly Worth
  3. Kim (any and all)
  4. Courtney Peck. (Yes, Courtney, you need to start a blog!)

Free DVD Rentals

Goodbye Blockbuster and Hollywood
...I won't even miss you.

It feels a little sad to write that. One of my favorite summers ever was when I worked at Hollywood Video in Corvallis. Ah, the memories... free movies, cute college-guy-co-workers, a constant stream of friends and acquaintances coming in to rent movies, and of course--wearing a tuxedo to work.

Since we've been married, Chris and I have had memberships at both major video stores, and we've put them to pretty good use. We've spent hours circling the new release wall, sometimes together, but more often conferring via cell phone about what to get. We've chased our children through the aisles, cleaning up after them and bribing them with overpriced treats. We have rented a lot of movies and paid a lot of late fees.

We have now found a better way: Redbox--the little red DVD vending machines popping up all over the nation. They showed up in Salt Lake City over a year ago, and our love affair began. The kiosks are usually located at a McDonald's or a supermarket; we have at least 10 within a 5-mile radius of our house. Just walk up to the machine, pick a movie, swipe a credit card, and out pops the dvd. No membership necessary--rent anywhere, return anywhere. Keep the DVD as long as you want; it's just $1 a night! We can go online and check which dvds are available at the nearest kiosks, and even reserve a copy through the website. And if that weren't enough, they also offer promo codes for free movie rentals. We found InsideRedbox, a site that lists current promo codes. So, we get all of our DVDs for Free!

Since Redbox only carries new releases, we use the local library for any older movies we want to see. It's free, and we can reserve movies through the library's online catalog.

So, goodbye Blockbuster and Hollywood.
...I guess I'll miss you a little, but I'll survive.

Announcing: CHS Class of '94 Blog

I just set up a blog for the Corvallis High School Class of 1994. It should be a good chance for people to reconnect with each other. If you are a member of the CHS Class of '94, and haven't gotten your blog invitation, let me know! I'm looking forward to finding some friends I've lost touch with over the years. Sadly, I missed our 10-year reunion, since it was a couple days before Michael was born.

Family Fun!

We had a great time.
David was a happy, attentive onlooker.
Michael loved watching the balls come up through the machine.
Tommy was great at cheering for everyone.
Maybe if I use the bumpers next time I can beat Chris!

Cruise Report

Wow, what a week. It was just as great as we imagined!
Here are some highlights...
Fun on the Ship
Interesting Ship Decor
This was by far our favorite picture on the ship. The cabin hallways were lined with interesting sketches...
Food, Food, Food...
We definitely had our fill of yummy food. Nice sit-down meals, salad bars, snack bar, pizza, burgers, room-service, a sushi bar, an ice cream machine, plus midnight Gala Buffets and Mexican Fiestas. We are still full.
our fill of desserts...
bad photo, but i had to show the sushi (my favorite)Entertainment
The ship had a large lounge/theater. They had music & dance shows, stand-up comedians, and a juggler. The audience participated in games like Family Feud and The Newlywed Game. There was always entertainment on the ship, especially if you get a kick out of watching drunk people make fools of themselves!
