Month In Review: September 2007

Welcome to Month in Review: September 2007, documenting key events for our family history. This is a great way to catch up with the Clarks. Since my blogging was a bit sparse during the last month, there are quite a few new bits listed below.

  • Chris took the kids up to his mom's house on Labor Day weekend. This is the third trip of this type that they have taken during the last year or so. I have been methodically tackling some major projects in my house, and finally have most of the nooks and crannies cleaned out and organized, with systems set up to (hopefully) keep them that way. This will (hopefully) reduce the necessity of these types of trips in the future. I have enjoyed the breaks, but I'm missing out on all the fun. What a great husband (see, he's really not as bad as he makes himself to be)!
  • We have become addicted to Italian Sodas.
  • Chris, his brother Tom, our little Tommy, and I went and saw Weird Al perform at the State Fair; This was a big deal, as we are huge fans of his music. Before the concert, Tommy predicted 5 songs that he thought we might hear, and he was thrilled that we heard 4 of them. He also loved seeing all 25+ costume changes--15 of which were all during one song! He was pretty tuckered out by the end of the concert, but managed to join in chanting "We Want Al" with the rest of the audience, begging for an encore. He was ecstatic that it worked. It was a great night!

  • Chris's brother Phil and his family moved from New Jersey to Utah. Phil came out and stayed with us for a few weeks while he looked for a house and a job. He found a house in Lehi and a teaching job in Midvale, just a few days before he flew back to drive Karine and the kids out. We are so happy to have more family nearby, and have already had lots of fun with them. This means there are now far more Clarks in the West than there are in the East. When are the rest of you going to join us?
  • We attended a wedding reception for Chris's cousin April, and her new husband, Jack. It was a very fun, beautiful night.
  • David is now walking as his main mode of transportation, and has mastered the stairs--up and down--which calms my anxiety considerably. His cheeks are getting chubbier by the minute, which only makes his dimples more pronounced and more adorable. (I know, I know, I need to get better at getting photos and videos posted...)
  • I attended a Girls Camp Pajama Party Reunion (remember a few months ago, when I was a bit nervous to go, but then I went and had a great time?). We finished up a service project we started at camp, watched a slideshow of all our camp photos (greasy hair and all), and had a little karaoke concert--an activity we intended to do at camp, but had to cancel due to running out of time.
  • I re-launched my blog with a new title: "I'm Not Just a Mom," and a new address: imnotjustamom.com. I wanted to reflect the idea that motherhood is a major part of who I am, but not the only thing about me, or the only thing I write about.
  • I finally managed to throw Tommy's Birthday Party (just a little over a month late). The big challenge was that at this age, he really is friends with everyone at school, and we felt like if we asked him to make a list of 5-10 friends to invite, we would have gotten a different list every day, based on whatever names came into his head first. So we opted to invite his entire school class and also his church class. We rented out a gymnasium and a few gymnastics coaches; it was a major hit. I just had to show up with cupcakes and party favors and got to come home to a nice, clean house.

  • Michael continues to impress us with the way he quickly learns the letter sounds. We quiz him by giving him a word, and he tells us what letter it starts with. He can even identify that "chair" starts with C-H; "shirt" starts with S-H; and "three" starts with T-H !
  • Chris decided that instead of torturing animals, he would torture himself by going on a vegan diet for a week!
  • And last but not least, we got two tickets this month. The first one was for not having our car registered; this was especially annoying, since the day before we got the ticket we had gotten some work done on the car, and driven it straight over to be inspected and registered, only to be told that a light was out--not just any old light, but the exact light that had already failed inspection once--the one we had just had fixed. And of course it was at the end of the day, so we would have to bring it back after the weekend. We absentmindedly parked the car on the street the next day, while we were at the fair--prime spot for trigger-happy meter-reader, anxious to give out tickets. The other ticket was my fault: rolling through a stop sign. Fortunately, I was driving the van this day, because it happened after the car incident, but still before we had resolved the registration issues. We did finally get the car fixed and even registered, but guess what? Now the same light is already out again! And don't even get me started on the van's issues. The windshield had no less than 8 nicks and cracks, so we waited until the last minute and replaced it last month, right before it was up for inspection, only to find out that it didn't require an inspection this year! Yeah, I'd say our chances are pretty good that we'll be replacing that windshield again next year...

Stay Caught up With my Feed

Dear Readers of My Feed:

I am just about to update my feed address to reflect the recent name change. This will require you to resubscribe to my feed using the new address. The only reason this post made it through is because I am writing it right before I switch the feed address. Please visit the blog and resubscribe to the new feed. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need help resubscribing.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

If you have no clue what I'm talking about, you probably don't use a feed reader, which means you can ignore this post completely. (But click here if you are dying to learn about feed reading.)

New Look, New Name, New Address

Welcome to my updated blog! Your old links and bookmarks should still forward you here, but you should update them to my new address: www.imnotjustamom.com.

What's in a name? Too often I find myself uttering the phrase, "I'm just a mom." ...To the receptionist who needs to list my occupation on a form. To the acquaintances who ask me what I do for a living or when I'm going to "go back to work." To my husband--when I am complaining that I never get to go out to business lunches at fancy restaurants or business conferences in quiet hotels. And yes, sometimes I even say it to myself. Truly, the words just a should never precede the word mom. The new title of my blog also reminds me that being a mom is not the only part of my life; there is more to me. In other words, I'm not just a mom because being a mom is a big job, and I'm not only a mom, because being a mom isn't all there is to me.

Why the change here? I love my kids, and I love keeping a family journal here, but it's not the only thing I write about, so I wanted to reflect that in my blog title.

What else is going to change? Not a whole lot. I'll still write about my adorable kids (who could resist?) and even my adorable husband. And I'll still be writing about whatever other random things strike me.

Is there anything else in the works? You can bet on it. But for now, I have to get some sleep.

Pardon My Dust

My blog is getting a much-needed makeover. If you happen to stop by in the meantime, and see some pretty crazy color schemes or layouts, just imagine that my kids are banging on the keyboard and grabbing the mouse from me. You will probably be right.

(fyi: I finally found a great tutorial on how to create a third column in blogger)

Tuning In

Top-Ten Tuesday

Whew, have I been busy! Major house organization project (more info to come), volunteering at school, a few houseguests, some failed attempts at potty training, vehicle registrations, planning a birthday party, comforting a teething baby, attempting to be a good wife, plus lots more--including a top secret project, to be revealed in the coming weeks.

And yet, the topic causing me the most stress has been trying to keep track of what Fall Season Premieres I want to be watching. Thank goodness for my Tivo (it gets me).

Top Ten: Shows on my Radar
  1. House. A whole summer of anticipation, and now I have to wait another long week for the next episode.
  2. Just for Laughs. Has anyone been watching this? Simply funny.
  3. Prison Break. I just started watching this one, so I have yet to become addicted. A few brooding men, some crazy convicts, and a guy in a diaper.
  4. The Office. If you can't find the humor in this show, you need to have your brain checked out.
  5. Chuck. I watched the premiere last night, and I'm not sure if it's gonna make my cut or not. The main character is a member of the Nerd Herd though, so maybe I can get some pointers for geek-training.
  6. Back to You. I basically just watch Patricia Heaton and think about how much I miss Everybody Loves Raymond. It might be a keeper.
  7. Lost. I have almost "lost" interest in the outcome of this show, but for some reason I don't stop watching. Still a while to wait, though.
  8. Heroes. This is only on my radar because I keep hearing about what I'm missing out on. I'm trying to decide if it's worth catching up on.
  9. Pushing Daisies. Lots of buzz around this show, which has a pretty intriguing premise. I'm trying to shield myself from too much info before I actually see it.
  10. Blues Clues (and Thomas the Train, and Cyberchase, and Backyardigans, and Arthur, and...) Let's face it, that's what will really be on most of the time. That is, when it's not Baseball Tonight.
What are you watching?

You're invited too

Since Nancy doesn't post anymore, I thought I would take control of this blog and let you in on a challenge. Go to the Clark family blog if you are interested in participating. I have no clue who you readers are, but I think some of you might be able to figure it out (Chelsea, Roger, Scott, Lisa, etc.). The prize will be good if you get it!

UPDATE: Nancy is still posting, she has just been a bit busy lately. Something about having a husband who is always at work. Except when he's at class. Or the gym. Or out with his brothers. Something like that. :) (I'll be back soon, I promise. With a big announcement)

UPDATE II: In case you didn't know, Nancy has once again infiltrated my post and inserted the UPDATE above. She isn't posting because the Fall series have begun again (House, Prison Break, 40+ others). Oh, and she is not pregnant. I don't think you can say you have a big announcement without people thinking something like that.

I Can't Believe I Ate the Whole Thing

We spent the last couple days debating the best methodology for preparing our stomachs for tonight's dinner--"is it better to skip lunch and be starving or should we eat a lot to stretch our stomachs out?" We ate at The Roof, a fantastic gourmet buffet on the tenth floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on Temple Square. Chris and I went with his brothers Phil and Tom. Thankfully Tom brought a friend so I wasn't the only one sitting on the sidelines listening to the three brothers engaging in their favorite activity--reminiscing and retelling stories that get crazier with each telling and will never ever grow old.

The food was fantastic (watch the video on their site for a sample). My preparation today entailed eating an early lunch of yogurt and granola so I would be hungry enough to eat my money's worth tonight. The preparation was indeed effective. Since arriving home, I have been sitting in one spot for at least 3 hours, waiting to feel well enough to drag my gluttonous body upstairs. Will I make it before morning? Only time will tell.

A Day of Change

Top Ten Tuesday

Tommy was on the news today. I won't bother posting a clip because it's a bit hard to see him, but take my word for it--he was adorable. A reporter went to his classroom to interview them about September 11th, since he and his classmates were born in 2001. That (and this post) got me thinking back to the way I spent that Tuesday 6 years ago, when I was a brand new Mommy of a one-month-old baby.

Top Ten: Ways That Day Changed Me
  1. I started watching the news regularly.
  2. I started paying attention to the political news, instead of just the Hollywood headlines.
  3. I recognized that I had no control over what kind of world my baby would be growing up in.
  4. I have more patience for security measures that I used to consider a pure nuisance.
  5. The phrase "foreign policy" is no longer an abstract concept I wrote essays about in college.
  6. I have a better appreciation for heroic people whose job it is to put their life on the line to help others.
  7. I view our nation's history--particularly stories of people living in wartimes--in a new light.
  8. I am less certain about the future; anything seems possible now.
  9. I am more interested in being an informed, involved citizen.
  10. I hold on to my loved ones a little tighter.
And you?

Clark Soda Fountain?

Top Ten Tuesday

We saw Chris's aunt and uncle, Phil & Lisa, when we were in Boise for a wedding a few weeks ago. We always love visiting with them, and they were so generous to help out with our kids. Their generosity always ends with us leaving their home with twice the amount of baggage, since their boys are just older than ours, and we get all their clothes as hand-me-downs. On this particular visit, we were overwhelmed. Not only did they load us up with bags of clothes and vegetables from their garden, but they sent us home with a new addiction, and supplies to feed it.

The night we were up late gabbing, they made us Italian Sodas--which we loved. Chris couldn't remember ever having one before, and I hadn't had one in years. We were anxious to see how they made them. They showed us the process, and explained that they had a store in town that sold the flavored syrup at a great price. Of course, we couldn't leave town without checking it out, so the next day--in between the wedding and the reception--we dashed over to stock up.

The store had a full aisle of flavors for us to choose from, which proved to be such a difficult process that we were almost late to the reception.

The above photos were not taken in the store. That is what we brought home with us! I guess I can stop worrying now about what to put on top of my kitchen cabinets:
How To Make an Italian Soda-Fill a 20-oz cup 1/3 full with Ice
-Add 2 or 3 oz. of a Flavored Syrup of Your Choice
-Add 2 oz. Half and Half
-Fill with Club Soda
-Top with Whipping Cream
-Enjoy!

You can click on the above photo to see our flavors up close.

Top Ten: Flavors for Italian Soda
(Don't expect two people who couldn't come home with less than 24 bottles to be able to rank the following in any particular order)
  1. Banana
  2. Creme de Menthe
  3. Egg Nog
  4. Root Beer
  5. Pina Colada
  6. Watermelon
  7. Chocolate Mint
  8. Caramel
  9. Vanilla
  10. Butter Rum
Any other suggestions?
